The band spent the day at Abbey Road studios working on what would become their second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets. Sessions had previously taken place with Syd Barrett and continued with David Gilmour throughout the rest of the month.

Ultimo brano dell’albim, Bike è un po’ il riassunto di tutto il disco (non a caso è posto alla fine), offrendo una panoramica generale sia dei temi che delle sonorità stesse degli altri brani. Assai enigmatico il finale, sviluppo degli ultimi versi del testo.

Penultimo brano dell’album, anche se era gia apparso, due mesi prima, nel lato B del loro secondo singolo “See Emily Play”(come “Scarecrow”). Anche questo scritto interamente da Syd Barrett. Il brano nella sua semplicità ed in tema esistenzialista, confronta l’esistenza dell’autore con uno spaventapasseri.

The penultimate track on the album, even though it was already published, two months before, in the B-side of their second single “See Emily Play” (like “Scarecrow”). The song written entirely by Syd Barrett. The song in its simplicity and existentialist theme, compare the life of the author with a scarecrow.

“Chapter 24″ é la nona traccia dell’album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, anche questa scritta da Syd Barrett. I suoi testi sono ispirati da un testo dal capitolo 24 del tomo cinese antico I Ching (Il Libro dei Mutamenti), conferendo all’intero disco un sottile misticismo.

“Chapter 24″ is the ninth track on the album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, this one written by Syd Barrett. His lyrics are inspired by a textfrom Chapter 24 Volume of the ancient Chinese I Ching (Book ofChanges), giving to a thin disk mysticism.

The Gnome, ottava traccia dell’album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, anche questa scritta da Syd Barrett, racconta la storia di uno gnomo di nome Grimble Gromble. Il testo psichedelico é ancora puerile ed è stato scritto da Barrett durante un precedente periodo riccamente creativo. Il brano è stato incluso anche nel lato B del singolo “Flaming” pubblicato negli Stati Uniti.

Mason ha suonato su ogni album dei Pink Floyd sin dal 1967, sebbene il suo contributo alla realizzazione dell’album A Momentary Lapse of Reason sia stato minimo (era suffragato da Carmine Appice).

Nonostante i conflitti sulla proprietà del nome ‘Pink Floyd’ Roger Waters e Nick Mason sono oggi in ottimi rapporti. Mason ha suonato la batteria nelle ultime due date del tour mondiale di Waters del 2002 sul brano Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun e anche in alcune date del tour europeo 2006 dello stesso Waters.

Nel luglio 2005 Mason si è unito a Gilmour, Wright, e Waters su un palco per la prima volta dopo ventiquattro anni come Pink Floyd, al termine del concerto del Live8, aLondra, suonando 5 brani: Speak to Me, Breathe (in medley con Breathe reprise), Money, Wish You Were Here e Comfortably Numb. Mason ha anche suonato assieme a David Gilmour e Richard Wright per il bis durante lo spettacolo di Gilmour al Royal Albert Hall, Londra, il 31 maggio 2006 e ha anche partecipato nello stesso anno ad alcune date del tour estivo di Roger Waters dal titolo The Dark Side of the Moon – Live.

Mason, che è sempre stato il collegamento tra Gilmour e Waters, ha sempre creduto possibile una reunion dei Pink Floyd. Di recente, dopo la morte di Richard Wright, ha però affermato che questa non è più possibile.

da Inside Out:”… I Pink Floyd sono nati da due gruppi di amici che si sono sovrapposti: uno stava nella zona di Cambridge, da dove provenivano Roger, Syd Barrett,David Gilmour e molta altra gente che in futuro sarebbe entrata nell’orbita dei Floyd. L’altro, composto da Roger, Rick e me, si era costituito durante il primo anno di un corso di architettura al Politecnico di Regent Street a Londra, dove iniziano le mie prime reminiscenze della nostra storia comune…. ”

I Pink Floyd iniziarono un tour nel circuito delle  università inglesi di 5 serati, iniziarono all’università di Leeds e finirono al Queen Mary College, Twickenham.

Pink Floyd’s 20-date European tour commenced at Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle and ended at Munich’s Olympiahalle. The band were joined by additional musicians: Dick Parry on saxophone and Terence ‘Snowy’ White on guitar and bass. Their stage show now featured a giant inflatable pig, suspended

by a steel cable for indoor gigs; animated sequences designed by illustrator and satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe; and an inflatable ‘nuclear family’ of wife, husband and 2.5 children on a sofa, designed by Mark Fisher and Jonathan Park, who both went on to work on the Wall live production. The setlist now included: Sheep; Pigs On The Wing, Part 1; Dogs; Pigs On The Wing,

Part 2; Pigs (Three Different Ones); Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts 1-5; Welcome To The Machine; Have A Cigar; Wish You Were Here; Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts 6-9; Money.

I Pink Floyd iniziarono un tour europeo di 20 concerti. Cominciarono al   Dortmund’s
Westfalenhalle e finirono al Munich’s Olympiahalle. Cnn il gruppo suonarono alcuni musicisti e, precisamente:  Dick Parry al saxophone e Terence ‘Snowy’ White alla chitarra e basso. 

I Pink Floyd suonarono nei loro concerti inglesi un work-in progress della versione di The Dark Side Of The Moon. Il tour culminò con 4 serate al London’s Rainbow Theatre

Session singer Clare Torry recorded her vocal for the song The Great Gig In The Sky at Abbey Road. The song was included on Pink Floyd’s next album, The Dark Side Of The Moon. Work continued on the album at Abbey Road throughout the month.

Animals was released in the UK. Tracklisting: Pigs On The Wing, Part 1; Dogs; Pigs (Three Different Ones); Sheep; Pigs On The Wing, Part 2. The album reached No. 2 in the charts.

Usci nel Regno Unito “Animals”. 

Interstellar Overdrive è il settimo brano (il primo della seconda facciata nel vinile), tra l’altro il più famoso, dell’album The Piper at the Gates Down. La celebrità del brano deriva anche dal fatto che il gruppo lo suonava ogni volta che si esibiva all’UFO e le versioni live erano lunghe oltre 20 minuti e quasi del tutto improvvisate, rispetto ai quasi 10 minuti della durata dell’album, in modo da poter reggere ascolti ripetuti.
Interstellar Overdrive, registrata il 27.2.1967 per essere pubblicata su 45 giri,venne all’inizio accantonata dal gruppo in attesa di incidere qualche altro brano.Venne reintegrata nell’album durante la session di missaggio del 18.7.1967.
Per la colonna sonora del documentario Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London, pubblicata lo stesso anno, ne é stata incisa una versione più lunga dalla durata di 16 minuti e 52 secondi.

Il brano trasporta l’ascoltatore un viaggio umano nell’universo, portandoci negli angoli più remoti e bui del cosmo, sviluppando i temi più cari a Syd Barret, lo spazio e la psicadelia. Lo sviluppo del brano segue una sola regola: almeno uno strumento deve mantenere il ritmo e sopra questo ritmo, interpretato ora da uno, ora da un altro strumento, si sviluppa improvvisazione strumentale psicadelica. Si viene introdotti in un incredibile viaggio spaziale che si fa sempre più inquietante fino alla conclusione del brano, scandita dal riff iniziale e poi da rumori meccanici.
